8 Simple Tips ~ For Managers

Sustainable Life coach has spent years coaching within businesses to help managers and leaders better lead their people.

There are various models that suggest ways to improve leadership, including our own findings. In this article, we offer eight practical steps for managers to enhance their effectiveness. These tips come from our experience coaching, training, and studying successful managers.

So here they are:

  1. Let employees decline promotions to management without any negative consequences. Not everyone wants to be a manager, even if they excel in their current roles. Career paths should be more flexible, so talented workers can be recognised and rewarded without having to become managers just for money or status.

  2. Update the skills managers need. Many leadership models focus on strategy and execution, but qualities like empathy, humility, and openness are also crucial for good management, even though they're often overlooked.

  3. Regularly survey employees to gauge engagement. These surveys should be tailored to different departments or locations and should assess how well managers are doing. They give immediate feedback on which managers need more help and which are doing well, unlike exit interviews which only happen after problems arise.

  4. Personalise how you choose and train managers. Effective management depends on factors like experience and mentorship, so it's not one-size-fits-all. Building trust among team members should be a key part of manager training.

  5. Provide ongoing training and support for managers. The first few months in a new managerial role are crucial, as managers face new challenges. Continuous coaching and assessments should focus on improving their skills and adapting to what the organisation needs.

  6. Adjust the workload for new managers. Moving into a managerial role takes time and energy. Reducing their previous workload helps them focus on their new responsibilities.

  7. Keep managers informed and involved. They should be the first to know about organisational changes so they can explain them to their teams. This helps everyone understand their goals and roles better.

  8. Recognise the efforts of supervisors, managers, and leaders. Leading can be tough, and managers face their own challenges. When senior leaders show appreciation, it creates a positive atmosphere and encourages managers to do the same for their teams.

To those starting out in their careers, we suggest considering management as a path worth exploring.

With the right preparation and support, managers can have a big impact on their organisation's success.
